the saddest story ever told

here's a cover i did of a magnetic fields song during the summer.

the saddest story ever told (mp3 / 1.1MB)

some peculiarities:
~guitar track
~violin track (four)
~bass guitar track
~drums
~vox

as for the drums, i used a practice pad, a piece of wood, a belt, and a tin cup. i tried this organic approach that i've heard fellow cadets do before and was inspired by. if it's not too grating a sound for you, i think it sounds pretty cool at points.

i also like my bassline, but i'm not one to brag.

i miss you, cadets. it's come to my attention that you couldn't upload stuff for a while. it's been fixed. party!!

also, major ups to ART PARTY events happening in new orleans again!!

a song

this song completes my 20 "track" "album". if you want one you'll have to buy me a CD burner or subject yourself to my whims. guitar work* inspired by that wilco song about spiders. organ work inspired by bach or some shit. lyrics inspired by boredum.

Aztec Libraries

*technically I'm not actually "playing" the guitar

EDIT: if you want to download the album, here it is all zipped up and hosted on yousendit for the next 6 days or 100 downloads. there are track numbers.

old songs with new words

enme may remember this as "space shanty" but it was an empty shell of a song then and now it has words to breath life into it's otherwise lifeless melodies.

Cyprus Isle

also, this song was once affectionately known as "happy dappy 3", and is a collaboration between myself, hunter daniel (drums), j mclendon (lead), and bozeman (bass). i added some shit to it today so that it could blossom into a 'real song', where all the instruments congeal together into full-on/near-cacophony as god intended.

the new music of reverend fingers

i have completed moving and now i no longer have an amp or really any means to produce electronic instrumentation besides this old Casio SA-38 from the 80's. i made this today in a few hours. i sort of decided it would be best without lyrics.

Yet another song. An original this time.

Wrote it just now. Beers and tears helped. Here's the lyrics if anyone is interested.

The THX-1138's - Georgia Blues

I despise time, I try
to escape death everyday.
But the clouds they all look black
They're also going to cry.

And I'd really like to pray
but Jesus ain't my friend.
What difference will it make
When I cause my own end?

They could call this prison growing up
But I call it a Southern Belle
And they'd call it breaking up
When I'm really breaking down
My life is heading nowhere
They'll call me Crash n' Burn
They could call it a part of life
But it feels more like death

All the times that I wept
All I needed was her smile
But the night I hang myself
I would like to see her cry

And the mind is always numb
From numbing it with smoke
I would really like to stop
But I'm afraid that it might hurt

At the clouds and the sky I was screaming
Nobody heard
At my friends I was pleading
Nobody turned
Then I'd crawl up to my mother
She helped me with my weight
Every dog has its day, I've had mine,
I want it back.

baby cymbal

There used to be a tiny little baby cymbal on the drumset at Joe's apartment. It was so tiny and cute and we all talked about how it probably feels next to the big "real" cymbals. So after this conversation, I wrote this song real quick and recorded it on garageband. In a perfect world, there would be little baby ding sounds and lots of percussion background. Sadly, this version is just me and a guitar.

Madonna!

last summer, Scandaliz Vandalistz attempted, and some would say succeeded, in writing a new song after we recorded our album. it's based on a true story-- back in the day, before she was famous, madonna used to go to lots of parties in new york and ask to join everyone's band. she happened to ask my aunt's best friend if she could join their band and they totally said no.... mostly because their band just sat around and played music in a closet. sooooo my sister, cadet morgan rosebud, wrote a poem/song about it, which we borrowed, adapted, and added to, and the result was our song "little brains" which turned out to be a really great song played live.... we never got any real recordings made of it, but i've recently discovered that we used my laptop during some practices, so there's a couple really early versions floating around on my computer. today i've decided to share them and i hope you enjoy.... please keep in mind that we were still in the process of writing the song at this point, and that it sounds crappy because it's recorded from a laptop microphone.
Little Brains with just vocals and guitar

Little Brains with the full band

Madonna! you can't be in our closet band! cuz!
We're in a closet in a closet in a closet...
Hey Madonna! you suck! you suck!
We don't need your fashion show!
We don't fit in the places you go!
Madonna asked if she could be in our band
and we said NO! cuz!
We're in a closet...
we're a closet...

We've made a world in here
We've got plenty to wear
Sick and Tired of breathing bad air
Needing a change in the atmosphere
We hide away in a place that's small
but there's no wiggle room, so it makes us feel tall
a tiny space filled with tiny kids
our brains are little, but our thoughts are big
so so so so so big!

In here! our minds are free!
Floating around with the dust bunnies
in the closet...
We learned your rules
and now we're done with them!
we don't want a part in your pretension
necessity is the mother of invention
we put ourselves away,
it's dark in time of day
in here it's like another dimension
but it's a closet...
life in closet...

Chorus

(It's a small world after all)

No tune! we've broken all our strings
No room! this place is shrinking
the good air's all gone
maybe we were wrong
about the closet...
obsessed with a life of prevention
now closet is the necessity of invention
the sun is brighter than this little light bulb
and we've started to forget what we're missing

we're in a closet
and we've lost it
we're in a closet
and we've lost it
we're coming out of it!

Polyrhythms and lyrics and stagnation of musical inspiration

I play everything. I had 4 songs i was working on at once and this one just happened to be the lucky one to actually get finished. The other ones are being neglected as punishment for their lack of appeal to me personally. As always, the title is meaningless.

Thinking About Thinking (Blues)

Also, if anyone lives in memphis and is interested in writing songs (clarification: i dont want to just "jam". i have enough musician friends who can sit down and play by ear and make some free-jazz cacophony. but i want to sit and talk about music, preferably with someone who knows more than me, and come up with something worthwhile) I can play drums and bass amateurishly, guitar somewhat adeptly, and anything on piano as long as i rehearse it a bit. I have a room stocked with instruments for at least the next two months when my roomate moves out, at which point i will probably only legitimately possess a 100$ gibson epiphone acoustic guitar.

What is the ultimate reality?
The cause of causality?
Others think that they do know,
But they always fail to show
What it is they think they see,
Faith can't be so easy.

The Church of Space still seeks the answer,
Amidst aquarius, capricorn, and cancer.
We don't say we claim we know,
but into SPACE we must go
to perform stellar experiments
on our exponential firmaments.

Have Mass on Mars and commune on the moon.
On Earth, you'll never see the stars come into bloom.
We say Pluto's a planet, not just a rock.
Blast off into our holy flock.
If you want a truly universal faith,
We await you in outer space.

Look at all these earthly churches
Pontiffs on their purchased perches
They read books while we write them
Their chants pale next to our bright night hymn
Space is full of contradiction,
but still better than earth's simple fiction

Terrestrial religion is lazy,
but outer space is fucking crazy!
Quasars spitting gamma rays,
Pulsars with their radio waves
You might think that space is quite a rave,
but Saturn isn't just a place to play.

A song, I tell ye.

An unfortunately incomplete song. It's incomplete because I have no means of recording songs on my computer except with the default windows thing (Sound recorder I think it's called) and it only let's you record 60 seconds. So if the other fellow cadets know of a better and easier (and free) way to record for more than 60 seconds I'd appreciate the information.

This is a song written when my morale was down, we shall say. If I would have had the appropriate progam i would recorded it all with more lyrics and stuff. Hope you enjoy. I'll post another one another day when i find it. All the songs I write I write them under the pseudonym "The THX-1138's" after the George Lucas film starring Robert Duvall.

Crushed Up Pills

South Pittsburg

This is a song I wrote and audacity-ed not 3 hours ago. It's about a boy who visits the town where his dad is buried, while with his dad when he's alive.

Near Jasper

I still remember the South Pittsburg store
On a street with no cars and a horse before the door
My mother would get a moonpie with a dime
Lookin at old uniforms from a time before my time

There was a downstairs where children could not go
Whiskey flasks, guns and things that could explode
My father would walk up with a new face on his head
I'd always think he'd rather be there instead.

And when he did die we put him near that ground
Some mountain near Jasper where the trees only grew around
There was a blue jay starin up in the sky
I knew what he was lookin for and then i started to cry

We went to gertrude's, to figure out the plan
I saw Aunt Hattie's dolls, and all the books she had
There was a church nearby that no one still went to

A watermelon patch in the front yard overgrew

10 years past and i looked for it all again
A few had closed but the one with horse was in
I stepped inside and saw the same thing as then
Told the lady my name and she told me she knew my kin

Singing Telegram

Katherine and I decided to be entrepreneurs this summer and offer singing telegrams to raise money for the SV funds. Chuck Vicious was the only taker. So Alanna, Katherine and I wrote this for his friend Sam that works at the Quik Mart on Madison. We recorded the telegram for fun (and posterity) with Producer Joe when Katherine came to visit me in Murfreesboro. Katherine plays bass, I play guitar, Charlie drums. Katherine and I both sing. Duh.

A Song

I made up this little ditty this a long time ago on the finger piano, which is a little african, hollow, body apparatus with an opening directly under some little metallic prongs you pluck with your thumbs. I added a little mini piano which was just a C scale I think, a harmonica, and wind chimes. It's kind of quiet and off rhythm.

A Song

Chords written by my friends Duncan and Tim, who play acordian and guitar respectivly on this track. I can be found playing the mandolin. I also added those wierd organ hums throughout the song afterwards. I had alot of trouble trying to add drums to this song, so I decided to leave it as it is. The "wind noise" is sort of annoying, as is the 17 seconds of silence intro. Also, the ending is slop.

concinnity

Inspired by a nytimes article about a violin maker and a violin etude I have been working on. It was hard to record with everyone practicing for juries in the practice rooms, so you might hear some jazz trumpet in the background if you listen hard enough. There is: guitar, violin (pizz and bowed), voice, and some percussion (which is really just me lightly banging on the f-holes of my violin).

Eastern Landscapes

Eastern Landscapes.mp3

I recorded this acoustic guitar rhythm in New Standard Tuning while messing around with it one day. For anyone unfamiliar with NST, it was devised by Robert Fripp (probably best known for being the creative impetus behind King Krimson) to balance the advantages of students enlisted at his "League of Crafty Guitarists". The tuning is in 5ths like a cello or mandolin, CGDAE, with the bottom string being tuned up to a G, which is a minor 3rd (which actually requires a higher gage string as I found after breaking about 4). Pretty much every chord you play is an inversion, and scale patterns make a little more sense. This song is very simple and in C I believe with the exclusion of one little repeated bridge where it gets dark. After recording the acoustic rhythm, I sent the file to a bunch of musician and/or creative friends of mine and asked that they add something to it to see how each would approach the song. The version I ended up using (and adding all the wierd kitchen percussion and toneless slide gutiar to) has lyrics by Trey Kirk, who also did all that vocal distortion himself which I haipply left in unaltered.

This was a departure for me, mainly because most of my songs are vaguely structureless and, for lack of a better term, exist as nothing more than crude "sound collages" I create by sloppily layering transitions and harmonies together. I wanted to make an actual "song" with a little more continuity and tradition (although there are some wierd parts too I'm sure you'll like).

lyrics:

Middle of July, the fireworks are over
Running around in circles
Simply waiting for Godot
And I was feeling kind of numb
Taking an icy shower
Then I heard a knocking on the door
Whoever is it?
It was you

Hey look, I've got a shovel and a pail
Why don't we sail,
And look for whales?
No use waiting for something that never comes
At the beach, we'll have some fun
Don't be blue
The sky is blue
So don't be blue

The sun is shining down
So lovely to be with you
Before you came I was a mess
Worrying over nothing
But to hear the tap of your feet along the boardwalk shows me joy in simple things
I found Godot a while ago with you
