Morphine Sister          mp3
lyrics by Alanna and Katherine / music by Katherine

The sister has appendicitis
Staying up for all the night is
No fun in a hospital room

They gave the sister morphine
So that her mind could be more clean
But her thoughts just got a little bit sticky like glue

I love my morphine sister
I love her more and more
She says that I can't do anything right
But what are sisters for?
I love my morphine sister
I love her more and more
I love her broken appendix
It's lying on the floor

I love my sister's E.T. finger
And although she broke my dictionary
She has a smile so merry
That my anger never lingered

Very cold and all alone
Little dumpling has no home
I am lying very badly
She has the mommy and daddly

I love my morphine sister
I love her more and more
She says that I can't do anything right
But what are sisters for?
I love my morphine sister
I love her more and more
I love her ruptured appendix
It's lying on the floor

Bring me there that oatmemeal
Until that little 'ppendix heals
Yeah make that little 'ppendix heal
And better we will make her feel

On the afternoon of May 30, 2003, my sister Morgan began to complain of a stomachache. Heedless of her pain, I tried to cheer her up by pouncing on her in bed. A few hours later, she was diagnosed with appendicitis, thus beginning the summer of morphine. Morgan was shuffled back to the hospital and between various doctors for the next several months, all the while suffering from an absessed appendix. To ease her pain, Morgan was given a clicker that periodically injected morphine directly into her bloodstream. In a more tame attempt to cheer her up, I wrote a poem and read it to my bed-ridden sister. Eventually she healed up and in 2005, Katherine adapted my poem and put it to music. Morgan has since kicked her addiction and has moved on to wine and cheese.
